A solution to Mexico’s water crisis

The water crisis in Mexico has reached critical levels as the Comisión Nacional del Agua reports 75% of Mexico’s territory is experiencing some degree of drought. This impacts millions of people and reveals the dire need for innovative and sustainable solutions.

As the nation's water supply remains under strain, nearly 43% of inhabitants of Mexico City lack access to potable water. This shortage stems from a 30% increase in water consumption since the coronavirus pandemic. To make matters worse, infrastructure problems result in 40% of water being lost due to poor maintenance.

It is not just impacting Mexico’s largest cities either. Rural areas face even harsher challenges, with 22 million Mexicans in marginalized regions living without piped water in their homes, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography. For these communities, bottled water is a costly necessity rather than a convenience at a gas station.

Adding to the pressure, agriculture accounts for 75-80% of Mexico’s water consumption. This leaves over two-thirds of the population in water-stressed areas, like central and northern Mexico.

A Burden on Households and the Economy

The average Mexican household spends 200 to 400 pesos ($10 to $20 USD) monthly on bottled drinking water. The overreliance on bottled water is reflected in the staggering revenue: bottled water sales in Mexico are projected to reach $19.88 billion USD in 2024, driven by home and restaurant consumption. This is a significant expense for a nation with an average monthly income of 12,000 to 15,000 pesos ($650 to $800 USD). Unfortunately, this financial burden doesn’t guarantee clean drinking water, as nearly half of the country’s surface water sources are contaminated. According to the Environmental Performance Index, pollutants, including fecal coliforms, salinization, agricultural runoff, and industrial activity, also affect 8% of underground water sources.

A Solution for Clean and Sustainable Water

The need in Mexico, like so many countries worldwide, is staggering. As the water crisis escalates, innovative Atmospheric Water Generation technology like AERstream’s offers a solution. AERstream leverages advanced filtration and water purification technology to ensure clean, safe drinking water by providing a sustainable alternative to bottled water.

By addressing contamination and water scarcity issues at their source, AERstream helps communities reduce dependence on costly bottled water while promoting healthier, more environmentally friendly water consumption habits. In regions like Mexico plagued by drought and limited resources, AERstream's technology transforms access to water and reduces financial strain for households.

Mexico’s water crisis requires immediate solutions. While infrastructure repairs, water conservation, and policy changes are necessary, businesses like AERstream can provide immediate, scalable, sustainable access to clean water. For millions, access to potable water is not just about convenience; it’s a matter of survival. By embracing innovative technologies like AERstream products, the country can take significant strides toward securing a healthier, more sustainable future for its people.
